CITI EYE was conceived by A. J. delaHoussaye, MD, FACS—known to his patients as “Dr. D.”

Dr. D received the Chancellor’s Scholarship to pursue his undergraduate education at Louisiana State University and later attended Harvard University in Boston. He earned his medical degree from LSU Medical School in New Orleans on a Board of Supervisors Scholarship, graduating with Medical School Honors as one of only three students in a class of approximately 200.

His research was published in the Life Science Journal, and he received the LSU Medical School Research Award. Dr. D completed his ophthalmology residency at Ochsner in New Orleans, where he served as chief resident. In 2002, LSU selected Dr. D as its Young Alumnus of the Year from among approximately 300,000 graduates. The award recognized his service to veterans, contributions to medicine and patented innovations. The previous year’s recipient was LSU basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal.

Dr. D is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Louisiana Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He has also earned the respected FACS designation as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, reflecting his commitment to professional excellence, ethical care and surgical standards. Dr. D has numerous patents and copyrights related to electronic medical records, artificial intelligence in ophthalmology and efficiency in ophthalmology. Dr. D has been voted the best eye doctor in our region since 2014.

A Doctor Who Was a Patient

Although Dr. D’s education and experience shaped him as a physician, one life-changing event transformed how he understands his patients.

In 2012, Dr. D was involved in a near-fatal bicycle accident. He suffered three fractured cervical vertebrae, a serious skull fracture and paralysis. He spent months in multiple hospitals, could not practice ophthalmology for more than two years and faced the real possibility that he might never return to the life and career he loved.

During his recovery, Dr. D experienced fear, uncertainty, dependence on others and several problems affecting his own vision. He prayed to God and promised that if He would give Dr. D the miracle of walking after a broken neck, he would spend the rest of his life giving Him the glory. Something happened and some think it's a miracle, but Dr. D walked again after months in a hospital bed. Everyone was surprised, except Dr. D's mom, who always believed that God would answer her desperate prayers.

Dr. D learned firsthand, during months as a bedbound patient, how vulnerable it can feel to be truly disabled with severe double vision and an inability to walk, talk or even breathe without a ventilator.

The accident changed Dr. D profoundly.

It gave Dr. D a level of empathy that cannot be learned from a textbook. It taught him that exceptional medical care requires more than knowledge. Patients need time, patience, reassurance and the confidence that their doctor truly understands what they are experiencing.

As difficult as the accident was, Dr. D remains grateful for the perspective it gave him. He believes the experience made him a more compassionate physician, husband, father and leader.
